Sunday with Will Poulter: ‘I leave the cooking to my mum, but we’ll do the dishes’

-

Sunday grub? Sunday lunch with my family has been the most important moment in the weekly calendar for as long as I can remember. It’s a chance to come together over food.

Who’s eating? My mum, my dad, my three siblings. My dad’s a Yorkshireman, so there’s always Yorkshire puddings. My mum is an amazing cook. There’s no pub in England that can make anything close to my mum’s roast.

Do you help? I leave the cooking to my mum, but we’ll do the dishes. That’s always been the deal: me and my sisters know that however old we are, and however long it’s been since we’ve been home, we help out.

After lunch? I watch sport with my dad. We’re big Arsenal fans, so it’s the Premier League on TV mostly. And we watch Doncaster Rovers, because that’s where he’s from. The two giants of football. Then maybe a box set.

Any recommendations? The plethora of streaming platforms means you can be paralysed by choice. I really enjoyed Shōgun. My friend Cosmo Jarvis is in it – I thought he was exceptional.

Do you get the Monday blues? Sometimes. I love what I do, so in most cases I look forward to Mondays, although the early wake-up can be tough because I’m not the best sleeper.

Sunday exercise? I’m a sun worshipper. If it’s above 16C, I’ll be outside trying to find a sunny patch, which is kind of: tell me you’re a Londoner without telling me you’re a Londoner.

Barbecue tips? It’s a waiting game. I’m no expert, but the barbecue people are always in a rush to throw on food. You have to wait for the flames to die down and coals to turn white, else you end up with burnt chicken that’s raw in the middle.
