Chinese hackers may have accessed Trump, Harris campaign phones

-

(NewsNation) — Chinese hackers targeted data from phones used by both the Donald Trump and Kamala Harris campaigns, according to reports.

NewsNation also confirmed, per a Democratic source briefed, that the Chinese Communist Party hack targeted prominent Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s staff.

The New York Times first reported hackers may have had access to phones used by former President Donald Trump and U.S. Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio.

A source then confirmed with NewsNation that “People affiliated with the Harris-Walz campaign were also targeted.”

It was unclear whether the hackers could have gained access to data stored on the devices. The New York Times report says the Trump campaign was made aware of the possible breach this week.

US on alert for election interference from Russia, China, Iran

In a statement to NewsNation, the Trump campaign blamed Harris’ campaign for the reported hack.

“This is the continuation of election interference by Kamala Harris and Democrats who will stop at nothing, including emboldening China and Iran attacking critical American infrastructure, to prevent President Trump from returning to the White House,” the statement read in part.

The Wall Street Journal Friday reported hackers also targeted “people affiliated with Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign.”

Foreign adversaries have shown continued determination to influence the U.S. election, tech giant Microsoft has warned.

The U.S. has seen an uptick in cyberattacks from Russia, China and Iran as the election nears, according to the Microsoft Threat Analysis Center.

A recent Iranian hack stole material from the Trump campaign, while Microsoft says the Harris campaign is also being targeted.

Groups in Russia recently created and helped spread viral disinformation targeting Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz, according to a senior U.S. intelligence official.
