Vice President Kamala Harris has her eyes on Michigan as she and former president Donald Trump blitz swing states in the final stretch of the 2024 campaign cycle.
The race is poised for a tossup in six states, Decision Desk HQ data suggests. Michigan — part of a so-called blue wall along with Wisconsin and Pennsylvania — could be especially important.
Meanwhile, Trump is looking at deep blue Atlanta, Georgia, as many Georgians are heading to the polls early. More than 2.5 million ballots have been accepted in the Peach State, which is already more than half of the total voter turnout in 2020.
Here’s a look at what both campaigns are doing today.
Trump-Vance campaign
- Trump will speak to the press by 10 a.m. ET from Mar-A-Lago.
- Vance will speak at a rally in Saginaw, Michigan, at 11 a.m. ET.
- Trump will speak at a Building America’s Future event in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, at 2:30 p.m. ET.
- Vance will speak at a rally in Holland, Michigan, at 3:30 p.m. ET.
- Trump will hold a rally in Allentown, Pennsylvania, at 7 p.m. ET.
Harris-Walz campaign
- Walz will speak at a rally in Savannah, Georgia, at 2:15 p.m. ET.
- Walz will speak again at a rally in Columbus, Georgia, at 6:30 p.m. ET.
- Harris will give a speech from the ellipse in Washington, D.C., at 7:30 p.m. ET.
Safety on the Trail
The campaign season so far has been atypical and fraught with safety concerns.
Former President Donald Trump suffered a graze wound to his ear during a July 13 assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where one attendee died and at least two others were injured. About a week later, President Joe Biden announced he no longer planned to accept the Democratic nomination and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the job. Harris then chose Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate.
As campaigning progressed, police would go on to arrest two more armed people who they believed posed a threat to Trump’s safety at different events. One man is accused of pointing a rifle through a tree line on Sept. 15 at Trump’s West Palm Beach, Florida, golf course where the former president was playing. Several weeks later, police arrested a man accused of possessing multiple guns and fake press passes outside of a California Trump rally.
A third man was arrested outside of a Trump campaign rally in southern California, but he denies trying to harm the former president.
Those developments, however, haven’t kept the candidates from their regular campaign duties. Those include presidential and vice presidential debates and visits to key swing states ahead of the November election.
