Nuclear submarine shipyard fire at Barrow-in-Furness leaves two in hospital

-

Two people were taken to hospital after a fire broke out at BAE Systems’ Barrow-in-Furness shipyard in Cumbria where British nuclear submarines are built, police said.

Cumbria constabulary said the fire at the nuclear submarine shipyard broke out about 12.45am. Police said there was “no nuclear risk” but residents should stay inside with doors and windows closed.

The two people taken to hospital had suspected smoke inhalation.

BAE Systems said: “We are working with emergency services to deal with a fire at site in Barrow in Furness. Two colleagues have been taken to hospital having suffered suspected smoke inhalation.

“At this time there are no other casualties and everyone else have been evacuated from the Devonshire Dock Hall and are accounted for. Further updates will be given in due course.”

The shipyard is home to Britain’s nuclear-powered Astute-class attack submarines, and is where BAE is building the Dreadnought-class submarines that will take over Britain’s Trident nuclear deterrent.
