Aare Afe Babalola Drops Criminal Charges Against Dele Farotimi

In a remarkable display of forgiveness and respect for traditional authority, Aare Afe Babalola, the founder and chancellor of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), has withdrawn all criminal charges against human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi.

The decision came after the intervention of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, alongside other prominent traditional rulers in Nigeria.

The controversy began following the publication of Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, where he alleged that Aare Afe Babalola had engaged in activities that compromised the judiciary.

The accusations were met with legal action from Babalola, who sought to defend his name and reputation built over decades of service and integrity.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday, Aare Afe Babalola acknowledged the influence of the traditional rulers, particularly the Ooni of Ife, in resolving the matter. He emphasized that in Yoruba tradition, the words of an Oba are considered a command and must be respected.

In his words: “I have always stood for integrity. I rejected an oil block, defended the EFCC law, and turned down ministerial appointments twice. It pains me that someone would try to tarnish the reputation I have worked so hard to build. However, I have nothing to gain from his imprisonment. I find joy in giving and forgiving.”

The Ooni of Ife expressed gratitude to Aare Babalola for heeding the call of the traditional institutions. Speaking on the matter, the Ooni highlighted the importance of unity and reconciliation in Yoruba culture.

“We, the Obas, deeply respect the hard work and sacrifices Aare Afe Babalola has made for the Yoruba race, Nigeria, and the world. His name is synonymous with excellence and dedication. We pleaded with him, reminding him that as elders, when our children err, we discipline them but also forgive them. Dele Farotimi is one of our sons, and forgiveness is a strength.”

This decision underscores Aare Afe Babalola’s magnanimity and his unwavering respect for the Yoruba traditional system. It also serves as a powerful reminder of the role of dialogue, tradition, and reconciliation in resolving conflicts.

Aare Babalola’s legacy as a lawyer, philanthropist, and educator remains untarnished, and this act of forgiveness further cements his reputation as a man of principle and compassion.
