‘Amorous couple’ arrested after allegedly causing flooding of Melbourne train stations

-

An “amorous couple” accused of causing major flooding and the evacuation of two Victorian train stations has been arrested.

A water pipe and fire sprinkler at Melbourne Central station were damaged on the night of 10 October.

It caused extensive flooding to several platforms, as well as triggering the automatic evacuation of both that station and nearby Flagstaff.

The pair have since been arrested and interviewed, Victoria police said on Friday.

A man, 30, was remanded in custody over unrelated matters.

He is expected to be charged with offences including criminal damage, public nuisance, wilful damage and interfering with fire apparatus.

A woman, 32, was released pending further inquiries.

The flooding was initially believed to have stemmed from an act of vandalism, but the state’s transport infrastructure minister, Danny Pearson, has said investigations found another cause.

“I’ve been advised that Metro [Trains] have reviewed the CCTV footage and it would appear that an amorous couple in a stairwell dislodged the sprinkler,” he told reporters at parliament on 16 October.

“Perhaps a stairwell may not be an appropriate place to find yourself in after dinner.”
