Today, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists will unveil the 2025 setting of the Doomsday Clock at 10:00 a.m. EST (1500 GMT). The clock serves as a symbolic measure of humanity’s proximity to global catastrophe, with midnight representing the point of no return.
Last year, the clock was set to 90 seconds to midnight, the closest it has ever been. This reflected pressing global challenges, including escalating geopolitical conflicts, the climate crisis, and the risks posed by nuclear weapons. The 2025 announcement will take these issues into account, as well as emerging threats like advances in artificial intelligence and biosecurity concerns.
The event will feature notable speakers, including Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, alongside experts in science, security, and environmental policy. The announcement, which will be broadcast live, aims to provide insight into the rationale behind the clock’s adjustment and serve as a call to action for humanity to address existential threats.
