Essences: 10 of the best

-

Essences – pioneered by Korean beauty companies – are some of my favourite beauty products in the world. But most people I know, outside the beauty world at least, don’t use essences. I think they are missing out. Essences are lightweight, water-based skincare products full of actives to deeply hydrate your skin. They leave it looking plump, glowy and “juicy”. While they are great for everyone, if you have really oily skin or you simply prefer lighter textures, an essence is the best way to go – especially in the summer. So how to use? Well, the same way you would a serum and moisturiser. Start your routine with a cleanser, then a toner (don’t be afraid of toners, they are no longer the alcohol-ridden monsters of old. Rather, with their balancing properties, they rid your skin of debris and prepare for what’s to come). Follow with a liquid exfoliator (every other day is fine) and then, just before your final step of an SPF, use your essence. What I choose depends on what extras I need. As well as hydrating, some place emphasis on brightening (Sarah Creal), refining skin texture (Fresh) or exfoliating (Augustinus Bader). What I love about essences is how they layer beautifully and never feel heavy or cloying. Ultimately, they give your skin all the hydration it needs.
