With the women’s football season starting up again in September, it’s a good time to take in this striking series, weaving together embroidery with photography, from Hong Kong-Malaysian artist Nicole Chui, who lives in London. This collection celebrates Baesianz FC, Chui’s team comprising people of marginalised genders with Asian heritage. Her friend Wendy Huynh photographed the London team in 2022 while her teammate Claudia Gemperle designed player cards, to which Chui added colourful, freehand stitches. “I wanted to recapture the joy of starting Baesianz FC in the scorching hot summer where we played football and hung out three or four times a week,” Chui explains. “Through embroidery, I wanted to express each player’s personality or story.”
