Gabe Evans projected to win Colorado Congressional District 8 race

-

(NewsNation) — NewsNation/Decision Desk HQ has called the race for Colorado’s District 8 seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in favor of Gabe Evans. See the results of the U.S. House and U.S. Senate races across the country here.

In one of a host of congressional races that could determine control of the U.S. House, Democratic Rep. Yadira Caraveo was looking to secure the seat against Republican challenger Gabe Evans.

Caraveo entered the race seeking a second term after winning the seat in 2022 against Republican Barbara Kirkmeyer.

Evans, a former police officer and veteran of the U.S. Army and Colorado National Guard, was seeking the congressional seat after serving one term in the Colorado House of Representatives.

Evans received endorsements from former President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson given his chance to flip a seat for the Republicans.

The race was pegged by the Cook Political Report as the lone toss-up in Colorado’s congressional representation.

District 8, which is the state’s newest drawn district, covers a large swath of north Central Colorado and is heavily Hispanic.

Caraveo, a physician, was attacked from both sides during her push for a second term in Washington.

Republican voters have criticized her record on addressing border security, crime and the fentanyl crisis, the Denver Post reported. Progressive Democrats accused her of veering away from her original stance to gain support from voters in what was always deemed to be a close race against Evans.

The freshman representative has proven to be moderate in her voting record in Washington and occasionally broke with her fellow Democrats.

Heading into Tuesday’s election, all 435 seats in the House of Representatives were up for election. Republicans control the chamber with a narrow majority of 220 seats, while the Democrats occupy 212 and three vacancies.
