Who is JD Vance?

Vance became Trump’s running mate for the 2024 election in July.

He first rose to national prominence with his bestselling memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” which detailed what it was like growing up in the struggling Ohio steel mill city of Middletown and his time in Appalachian Kentucky.

Before attending Ohio State University Yale Law School, Vance served in the U.S. Marine Corps. After college, Vance worked in the technology industry in California’s Silicon Valley and later moved back to Ohio to start his own investment firm.

In 2021, Vance became a candidate in the race to replace retiring Republican Sen. Rob Portman. During the primary, Vance secured Trump’s endorsement, despite his past criticisms of the former president.

He ultimately beat Democratic candidate Tim Ryan in the general election, which was a race the nation watched closely.

Vance is married to his law school classmate Usha Chilukuri Vance, with whom he has three children.

Polling for Vance

Latest polling from FiveThirtyEight shows Vance with a 45% unfavorability rating, with 37.2% of those surveyed considering him “favorable.”

A Forbes/Harris X poll conducted between Oct. 21 and 22 found Vance leads Walz in national favorability by a slim margin: 37% to 36%.

However, Vance’s net unfavorability, in that same poll, is 43%, which is more than the 39% Walz got.
