The EU is toughening its stance against Donald Trump’s renewed claim over Greenland, warning against any attempt to seize the territory by force.
“I think we’re going to have it,” Trump said, questioning Denmark’s claim to the island and suggesting refusal would be “unfriendly” to the free world.
Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory, holds strategic importance due to its Arctic location and rare metals. While not an EU member, it enjoys special ties, including access to EU funds and free movement. Crucially, it falls under the EU’s mutual defense clause, obligating aid in case of aggression.
“Borders may not be moved by force,” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz warned. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stressed that “Europe must define its future,” while France pledged solidarity if Denmark requested support.
EU Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius reinforced the message: “We are ready to defend Denmark.”
