Shoppers still worried about costs despite falling inflation rate – industry data

-

The majority of households are worried about the rising cost of shopping despite slowing price rises, according to industry data.

Kantar Worldpanel – which tracks supermarket till prices, sales and market share – said its measure of grocery inflation slowed to 1.7% in August.

It means grocery prices are still rising just less than the 1.8% seen in July – the first rise in more than a year – but more than the four weeks running up to early July.

Despite this fall, 60% of households remain worried about the rising cost of their shopping, Kantar said.

The second biggest financial worry is the cost of home energy bills, which are due to rise from October.

How shopping has changed

More oven chips and beer are being bought now than 15 years ago, the market research company said with sales up 44% and 12% respectively.

As term time began fruit bars and fromage frais sales were up as parents stocked up for lunchboxes.

The UK’s biggest grocery shops

Tesco remained the UK’s most shopped at supermarket, Kantar data showed, followed by Sainsbury’s and Asda despite it seeing a 5.6% drop in market share. It’s the biggest drop of all retailers.
