A three-year-old girl has died in hospital after being hit by a car on a major thoroughfare in Melbourne’s south-east on Thursday.
Emergency services were called to Heatherton Road, near the intersection of James Cook Drive, in Endeavour Hills about 8.30am on Thursday, following reports a child had been struck by vehicle.
Ambulance Victoria said the child was taken to Dandenong hospital in a critical condition.
Victoria police on Friday said the girl has died in hospital. A 24-year-old man has been charged over the incident.
“It is alleged the young girl was crossing Heatherton Road, at a pedestrian crossing with family, when she was struck by a car,” police said in a statement.
They said the driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and was arrested.
The Endeavour Hills man has been charged with one count of dangerous driving causing serious injury.
He was released on bail, and was expected to appear before the Melbourne magistrates court on 23 October.
Police said further charges were being considered after the child’s death.
Photos from the scene show two children’s scooters lying on the side of the road.
