As autumn sets in, seek a splash of mood-enhancing colour with winter’s new hottest hue – rich burgundy. We have Gucci’s creative director Sabato de Sarno to thank for the shade, which featured prominently in his debut SS24 collection, inspired by the elevator interior of the Savoy hotel in London where founder Guccio Gucci once worked as a porter. De Sarno used it liberally across both men’s and womenswear, on bags, high-shine leather goods and separates. Tip: the wallet-friendly way to buy into the Gucci red universe is the Rosso Ancora lipstick (£37).
Red alert: Salma Hayek at Gucci AW24 in MilanThere are many variations of the shade in winter collections, from deep oxblood to rich merlot, even tipping into dark aubergine. The burgundy bag is a great place to start with this trend. Arket’s crescent-shape shoulder bag (£189) is roomy enough to stash a laptop, while Mango’s mini crossbody shopper (£35.99) has room for a phone and essentials. The high street has not only jumped on the burgundy bandwagon, but embraced it with gusto, from John Lewis’s rich wrap double front coat (4) to Reiss’s blazer (2). These rich tones add depth to your wardrobe and look chic paired with jeans and a knit. Try the Frankie Shop’s elegant long wool coat (£359) or Kitri’s high-shine belted vinyl trench version (£220). Not only is burgundy a timeless colour, but it also marries well with neutrals, pinks and reds, as seen with Mint Velvet’s burgundy with pink spot print dress (£150), Albaray’s jacquard dress styled with an oversize grey knitted tank (5) or accessorised with a high-shine red bag at Essentiel Antwerp (3).
